-         -So says President David Granger on the third anniversary of the Accord

On the occasion of the 3rd anniversary of the Cummingsburg Accord, President David Granger said entering into such an arrangement was the better option for Guyana, given the country’s political climate at the time.

However, when asked about a review of the accord, as touted by the Alliance for Change, the President stated that at this point in time, the parties are not compelled to undertake such an activity.

Nevertheless, he said the Alliance for Change, which is the second major partner in the coalition, can choose to explore several options.

“There is no compulsion that the accord be reviewed because the shortest period is three years and the longest period is until 2020. So the Alliance for Change has several options, it can allow the accord to proceed it can allow it to expire in 2020 or it can make a request for the meeting but APNU is committed to coalition politics and the advent of the coalition into Government is good for Guyana. We are better together and we would like to see the accord continue,” the President said.

Meanwhile, Leader of the Alliance for Change, Raphael Trotman said those who crafted the accord and had it signed, wanted some discussions on the ways it can be strengthened.

“I believe that this is healthy for the coalition and so the AFC view is that yes it allows for and it was designed for a review and it should be reviewed because there is no doubt that there are areas that need to be refashioned we are vindicated in our decision to enter into an accord and therefore we should not shy away from it,” Trotman said.

Trotman said a letter calling for the accord to be reviewed has already been drafted and will be discussed extensively at its National Executive Council meeting, slated for February 17.

Thereafter, the letter he said will be sent promptly to the president.
