Water/Electricity Subsidies and free transportation for school children.
- For laid off sugar workers in Region Six
Free transportation will be provided to and from school for the children of sugar workers who have been laid off in Region Six.
A motion to this effect was approved on Thursday, February 01, by the Regional Democratic Council.
Also, a second motion was approved paving the way for subsidies for electricity and water for the affected workers.
The motions were presented by the Regional Vice-Chairman, Denis DeRoop who noted that the thousands of laid off sugar workers are yet to gain alternative employment.
“I am happy that we had a unanimous decision on the first motion which is providing transportation for the Upper Corentyne possibly one bus in the Upper Corentyne area between 56 and Crabwood creek, one in Canje and an additional one in East Bank Berbice,” he said.
Meanwhile, with regards to the provision of subsidies for electricity and water the Vice-Chairman related that this will be a temporary provision.
He is therefore hoping that Central Government takes this into consideration.
He said, “The second motion is more of a national policy issue and so we make a recommendation from the region here to have all these workers that were severed from the estate to have subsidy for electricity and water, and you know that could help them to recover. This is a temporary initiative until they can see alternative employment.”
There were no objections to either of the motions.
