The existence of several videos showing the execution style killings of several persons allegedly by a Venezuelan gang known as “the Syndicato” is engaging the attention of the National Security Council.
This was revealed by Chief of Staff of the Guyana Defence Force, Brigadier Patrick West, who says border patrols have since been intensified.
Separate videos showing the gruesome murder of two men and four women have been circulating online.
“From the time the patrols are out, there are no reports of any illegal activities. And when the patrols would have returned to base, then there would be the occurrence of some activity. I believe that the Guyana Police Force is doing their work to ensure that they can unearth any issues relating to Syndicatos or any illegal groups working in those areas,” the Army Chief says.
Brigadier West explained that while the killings are occurring on the Venezuelan side of the border, the matter is of great concern, as there is the possibility of such incidents reaching this territory.
“There may be an overspill because there may not be enough issues on that side and they may cross over. You may have the movement of illegal immigrants because of the challenges that are occurring on that side. And so, it becomes more than a security matter, it becomes a social, political and economic problem,” he says.
The Chief of Staff said the Guyana Defence Force will be utilizing technologies, such as drones, to monitor activities at the border.
