NEW PROJECT LAUNCHED TO EMPOWER TEENAGE MOTHERS.
The Guyana Responsible Parenthood Association (GRPA) and the Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) have launched a new project aimed at empowering teen mothers, vulnerable adolescent girls and their families.
The ‘Still I Rise: Reintegration of Teen Mothers in Education’ project is being supported by the Education Ministry, Republic Bank and the Rotary Club of Georgetown.
Fifty young women will be provided with the basic items to re-enter the school system and benefit from sessions on sexuality education, personal development and psycho-social support.
The first phase of the project will be from July to December 2016 and the second, January to June 2017.
Minister within the Education Ministry, Nicolette Henry says despite various efforts, teenage mothers remain the most vulnerable group in Guyana.
She has suggested a few measures that can be taken to minimize teenage pregnancy, including access to age appropriate, accurate and comprehensive information on sexual education.
Guyana is said to have the second largest rate of teenage pregnancy in Latin America and the Caribbean.
