The National Assembly passed into law the National Registration (Amendment), bill after a rigorous debate. The assembly was thrown into the deliberation after the announcement by the Guyana elections commission that it will reopen the claims and objections period.
Members of the opposition, however, had other views but Home Affairs Minister Clement Rohee in defending the bill, said the amendments would address the issue of disenfranchisement of eligible Guyanese.
Minister Rohee also noted that the intention of the bill is not to favour one political party but for the benefit of all.
Gecom announced it would re-open the claims and objections period beginning July 25 for 13 days, to give persons who are now in possession of source documents the opportunity to register.
