K&S grand finale kicks off smoothly

The grand finale of Guyana’s signature sport event, the Kashif and Shanghai football tournament got off to a good start with a double header at the Guyana National Stadium at Providence, on New Year’s Day.
Guyana’s Pele and Trinidad and Tobago’s Caledonia AIA went head to head after football fans witnessed Guyana’s new President Donald Ramotar extended best wishes to the two teams with the customary handshake. He was accompanied by Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Dr Frank Anthony, Permanent Secretary Alfred King, President of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Franklyn Wilson and other personalities in the football fraternity. Caledonia AIA head coach Jamaal Shabazz who was among the inspirational figures in Guyana’s Golden Jaguars advancing to the next round of the 2014 World Cup Qualifiers, was also present.

Pele and Caledonia AIA were the last two teams standing in the tournament that kicked off on December. The double header began with a battle between Amelia’s Ward and Milerock that ended with the latter team emerging the victors with a two goals to nil and walking away with $500,000 and a trophy.
From the inception, Pele and Caledonia AIA proved that they had what it takes when Pele defeated the Timehri Panthers 10 goals to nil in the opening game and the Trinidadian team gave New Amsterdam United a 10-1 thrashing during the Christmas Day match.
The match went according to schedule despite inclement weather earlier in the day and a clash with the Georgetown Football Association’s Banks Beer Knockout Cup finals at the Guyana Football Club ground.

President Ramotar and his entire Cabinet were present in a show of support for the tournament which has been in existence for 22 years and which was recently on a roster of events targeted for a boycott by elements in the opposition political parties.
The highlight of the evening was the after match show featuring Jamaican reggae star Jah Cure on the forecourt of the stadium.
