Junior Leg of National Table Tennis Championships kicks off

The junior leg of the National Table Tennis Championship commenced on yesterday with an opening ceremony at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall. The annual event is organized by the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) with the support of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport.

As in Tinseltown, "Wimbledon Way" will eventually comprise pavements and hand or footprints and signatures of the sport's best - presumably from the current generation onwards. The walk, an idea of the local council to build interest for the 2012 Olympic tennis event at the club, will lead from Wimbledon rail station up the hill to the more picturesque village high street.

Suriname gearing up for hosting of IGG 2011

Suriname’s preparations for the hosting of the 2011 Inter Guiana games are moving apace as the event is set to begin on October 20. This is according to Guyana’s Sport Director, Neil Kumar after attending a meeting with sport representatives of the three guiana’s.
The meeting at Paramaribo Suriname which was attended by Neil Kumar and Sport Minister, Dr. Frank Anthony discussed details of Guyana’s participation.

Federer named 2009 player of the year

World No. 1 Roger Federer has once again collected an armful of awards as the ATP handed out their “best of 2009” nods. The Wimbledon and French Open champion was named the 2009 player of the year. The award is based on ATP rankings. Federer is the first player since Ivan Lendl to regain the No. 1 ranking after losing it.

At the closing of the 53rd Senior Regional Caribbean Table Tennis Championships last evening at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) received a gold medal for its excellent organizational skills.

Guyana welcomes teams competing in 53rd Senior Caribbean Table Tennis Federation

Prime Minister Samuel Hinds performing the duties of President today welcomed teams that are in Guyana for the 53rd Senior Caribbean Table Tennis Federation. He told the competitors that he hopes the games would lead to greater friendship and closer relations. Speaking at the opening Ceremony at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, Homestretch Avenue, Prime Minister Hinds said, “We want people to come here and watch the games; we also want people to be motivated so they themselves take part in playing table tennis and other games.”

Guyana ready to host 53rd Table Tennis Championships

The association’s president during an interview added that the championship featuring some of the region’s best at the sport is expected to entertain a high level of competition.  The 53rd edition of the championship will begin this Friday here in Guyana and will see some of the region’s best players on show.  President of the local table tennis association, Henry Greene noted that the association’s various sub-committees have been working to deliver an event of international standard.

Federer, Sampras, Nadal, Agassi Team-Up in Hit For Haiti Exo

Here’s a better story than the Serena one I just posted. Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi will compete in a doubles “Hit for Haiti” exhibition at the Indian Well Tennis Garden on Friday, March 12. The teams? According to the Indian Wells website Federer will team with Sampras to play Nadal and Agassi.
