Junior Leg of National Table Tennis Championships kicks off

The junior leg of the National Table Tennis Championship commenced on yesterday with an opening ceremony at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall. The annual event is organized by the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) with the support of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport.
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony who declared the tournament opened said that the ministry is pleased that GTTA has been successful in keeping the competition going. The number of participants of the tournament has increased over the years.
Anthony said having more young people involved in and, playing table tennis has been one of the objectives of the ministry and that is why the ministry has partnered with GTTA to procure table tennis boards for schools. Last year the ministry secured 30 boards for 30 schools and a similar amount is being secured for another 30 schools in 2011 and 2012, Minister Anthony said.
He added that the ministry is seeing the culmination of its work with GTTA as a number of the young people involved in the competition are from many of the schools the ministry would have supplied with tennis boards.
The junior leg of the championship featuring the under 10 and 13 players will run for two days, December 10-11. The senior leg takes over from December 15-18 at the National Gymnasium. Among other speakers at today’s opening ceremony was Director of Sport, Neil Kumar, Commissioner of Police and President, GTTA, Henry Greene.
